“My name is David, I am 57 and have been wearing Phonak hearing aids supplied by Rob at RJD hearing since Oct 2024. I have previously had free ones from Specsavers for a couple of years but these were uncomfortable and just not improving my hearing. Sometimes I didn’t bother to put them in at all but my Phonak L90’s are in my ears all day every day and are now just part of my daily routine.
These were Rob’s preferred set for my needs and he let me take them on a trial with no obligation. This worked really well as I could get used to them slowly without worrying about what I’d just bought and wondering if they were right for me.
I am also a bass player in a couple of local rock cover bands and have previously tried wearing small plastic earplugs during gigs to protect my hearing, but these caused itching, were difficult to push in and to be honest I’m not sure they made much difference.
So after a discussion with Rob he said he could get me some custom moulded ones which would be far superior and keep out some of the damaging frequencies I was being subjected to at high volume. Standing next to a drummer crashing cymbals all night probably isn’t a good idea ! However the show must go on and I needed to give it a go. Rob took some impressions and said they’d be ready in a couple of weeks.
These have now arrived and fit perfectly. They are transparent, lightweight and most likely nobody will even notice them. They really do make the outside world quiet, which is a big contrast from my Phonaks which I need every day to make everything louder !
It took a little while to get used to their weird shape and fitting them in my ears but I’m getting the hang of it. I went to see a friends band last week and wore them and the difference in volume was huge. So Rob has done a fantastic job for me in both scenarios. If you are a musician maybe its not too late to stop your hearing from getting worse.
So my advice would be to get Rob to help if you play in a band. Ive only known him since last year and nothing is too much trouble. My visits to Rob are usually with a list of questions and I come out with everything answered . I cant thank him enough for his help with my hearing.”
